Virtue is an inner ability to achieve something definite and excellent. It is an inner excellence, and efficacy. It flows from within, not just an ordinary external activity. To be virtuous means to be chaste, upright, dutiful. From the biblical usage of the word in Prov. 31:10 (NIV &GNB), to be virtuous means “to be noble in character; to have a character that cannot easily be faulted… It means to have an excellent spirit”. Looking at the usage of the word in Lk: 6:46 (where Jesus said “…. for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me”, it means power, an inner power capable of achieving something that surpasses all others. In other words, Virtue is an excellent and powerful inner life that is capable of achieving externally, something that surpasses all others.
We have a need to understand all this in order for us to know the gravity of the demands that God is placing on our lives as Christians. Our calling in Christ Jesus is multifaceted: In Phil. 1:29, we are told that it is given unto us both to believe on Christ and to suffer for His sake. In other words, we are called not only to believe on Him but to suffer for Him. In the same vein, we are called unto glory and virtue Whenever you mention the word “virtue” or “virtuous” today, the heart quickly goes to the virtuous woman in Prov. 31. But we are seeing from scriptures that a virtuous life is expecied not only from Christian women but from men also. We have been called to a Iife of excellence, not that of mediocrity. Ours is a call unto an upright and dutiful life, a life that is capable of achieving something definite. God’s desire is that we live a virtuous life and achieve excellence in whatever He calls us to do.
“And beside all this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge.” (2 Pet 1:5)
God’s expectation of us is not that of complacency. He expects that on top of our faith, on top of our salvation experience, we must add virtue. We must move forward. We must grow on. You have believed on the Lord Jesus. You are born again and now a child of God. Good. But what increase have you had over your faith? There are those who are contented with staying at the level of the salvation experience. Instead of growing in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18), they are satisfied remaining babes in Christ taking the grace of God for granted. Such people exhibit a complacent attitude towards spiritual things. They have to be pushed and pushed before they arise to do anything spiritual. Though sluggish in their spiritual growth, they are not bothered. Such people often say “I am satisfied with a simple Christian life” or “I don’t want to be fanatical” or “go too far in my Christian life”, They keep struggling with one sin or the other. Lacking inner drive to go far with the Lord, they are unable to have victory over sin. Anything that seems too hard for the flesh, they refuse. They pamper the flesh and live a “convenient” Christian life, forgetting that we are soldiers of Christ and as good soldiers, we have been instructed to“… endure hardness” (2 Tim 2:3). Such are Christians who are complacent about going forward, and to turn backwards they do not desire. Such is the life of a lukewarm Christian. They would never venture to risk their lives for the sake of Christ. Concerning them, the Lord said “… I will spew thee out of my mouth” (Rev 3:16).
If a farmer spends all his lifetime struggling to clear the bush, when actually will he plant, not to talk of harvesting what he planted? The Christian life goes far beyond victory over sin and over the flesh. Victory over sin is the basic foundation for the Christian life as it is written:
“ Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His; and, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity” (2 Tim 2:19).
There is more to a house than the foundation. If you spend your whole lifetime clearing the bush of sin, when actually will you enter into God’s purpose for your life? God’s desire is that we do away quickly with sin and the flesh so as to concentrate on His purpose for saving us. More than that, He wants us to be virtuous in it. And this is attainable. Ruth (Ruth 3:11) was well known in her time as a virtuous woman. What did she do? She was excellent in kindness and was so resolved about what she wanted to do that she pursued it to an excellent conclusion even though the road was rough. Daniel, even though in captivity in a heathen land, was a man known for his excellent spirit (Dan. 5:10-12, Dan. 6:3). Yet these were not born virtuous. Their lives started just like any of us but they were diligent enough to allow God to work this out in them. Nothing less than that is expected from our lives, having been made partakers of the grace of God that comes through Christ Jesus.
Our Expected Scope Of Excellence
1. In Thought
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Phil 4:8)
Every action in a man is normally preceded by his thoughts. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matt. 12:34) and a man’s life is shapened by his thoughts. (Prov.4:23 GNB. ). God places a demand on our lives to achieve excellence even in our thoughts. When you see anyone fornicating or committing adultery, something goes on in the thoughts ever before the action is effected. As a flash of lightening, lustful thoughts go on first in the mind and if given consideration and attention, a force of attraction is created towards the object (the man or the lady) and soon, the action (fornication or adultery) is effected. The same thing applies to lying and every other sin. It then becomes crucial for us as individuals to take note of the thoughts we think. If your actions must be pure, then you must ensure that your thoughts are pure. For your action to be excellent, you must begin to think of excellent things. And we have power in Christ Jesus to control what stream through our minds. That scripture says “Whatever things are true,.. if there be any virtue… think on these things.” There is an inner ability in us as children of God to decide on what to think of and what not to think of. Prov. 4:23 says “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life”. God has given us that ability to keep our hearts under lock-and-key and open it only to thoughts about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, things that are of virtue and of praise. And you can stand on guard against evil, lustful and corrupt thoughts, refusing to open the door. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, they are mighty through God in bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. God expects us to be virtuous in our thoughts. We are instructed to think about things that are excellent and to achieve excellence in controlling our thoughts. Virtuous thoughts precede virtuous actions. A man that is not bothered by the kind of thoughts that stream through his mind will find it difficult to be a man of virue. And since God Is going to judge us not only accordng to our deeds but also according to our thoughts, it becomes too costly both now and in eternity to let loose our thoughts.
In Conduct.
For I say unto you that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it hath been said, thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thy enemies; But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you, that ye may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for He maketh His Sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love them who love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven, is perfect.” ( Matt. 5:20, 43-48)
God’s expectation concerning us is much beyond what the natural man does or can achieve. The natural man is sometimes naturally good, but it can never achieve the goodness of the Lord. It can not please God. The Scribes and Pharisees were very religious people. They kept the law and the commandments of the Lord and gave alms but with self effort. Because of this, they were unable to go beyond the natural in their righteousness. They loved their neighbours and hated their enemies, forgetting that even the heathen who do not know God, do the same. So what is the difference? God will be unjust to give them a reward for so doing.
Unfortunately, many Christians behave in the same way and they expect God to bless them and reward them. You may hide under the umbrella of “born again” but except you repent, go beyond this, you will likewise perish together with unbelievers. You cannot hide under “salvation by grace” and still do as unbelievers, yet expect God to count you among overcomers. What have you overcome? You hate your enemies, curse those who curse you and persecute and do them bad with the excuse that “we are all human beings” ! Have you not read that those who live as human nature tells them to, can not please God? (Rom. 8:8). You give tooth for tooth and eye for eye and greet only those who greet you. So what is the difference between you and the unbelievers? Think about it. Do you think with all these you will be allowed into the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. He clearly instructs that except your righteousness exceeds that of the Scribes and the Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of God. Whether in thought, character or deed, God’s demand is that of excellence. God who gave birth to us by His word is perfect. He is the embodiment of excellence. A common example of His excellent behaviour is the fact that unlike human beings, he makes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and unjust. There is never a day He shines the sunlight only upon the righteous and keeps the wicked in the dark. Despite the wickedness of the wicked, God still shows them love and does them good. Where is the love of God in your own heart?
3. In Speech
To be virtuous is our call as Christians and for any one to come short of it, is to endanger his eternity. We are called unto a life of uprightness and excellence in every area of our lives. Character-wise, we must be chaste; in speech, we must be faultless.
“..if any one is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check (Jas 3:2).
This is God’s expectation from our lives. Idle talks, foolish jesting, corrupt communications, meaningless speeches must be far removed from our lives for they act as little foxes that spoil the vine. A careless word spoken in one second can raze down what you have built for years. We must be virtuous in speech. God’s injunction is, “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how you ought to answer every man” (Col. 4:6). Our words must be weighed before we utter them. God utters His words in righteousness. He does not speak anyhow. And this is the person unto whose image we are called to be conformed. A man who does not know how to control his lips is a man who knows not how to control his body and actions. He is a man who falls into several snares because of his words, for in the multitude of words, there lacketh not sin (Prov. 10:19).
God’s desire is for our words to be full of virtue: words spoken with grace and seasoned with salt, with our very lives (the life of God in us). It is such words that carry the power of God with them, words that are capable of achieving something excellent. Many of us are unable to accomplish God’s purpose in our lives because our words are often profane and contaminated. You preach and nothing seems to happen in people’s lives. It could be because of the kind of words you utter not only on the pulpit but behind the pulpit, in real life situations. If this desire of God for us to be virtuous must be accomplished in our lives, then we must begin to desire and practise same from now on.
4. In Service
Whatever service of God we find ourselves engaged in, we are called unto glory and virtue. Whatever is the call of God on your life, yours is to serve dutifully and excellently. God does not tolerate slothfulness.
“Whatsoever your hand findeth to do, do it with thy might, for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest” (Eccl. 9:10).
Laziness must not be found around your life as a child of God. We are called to spend and be spent for the sake of the Lord. We must be dutiful. We must be able to achieve God’s goal, and reach the mark that God has set for us in our call. We are called to be heads and not tails. It is a calling and not our choice. If it is choice some may actually prefer to be tails, not pressing towards attaining excellence in God’s purpose. Whether in preaching, in business, in academics or whatever service of God we are engaged in, we must be virtuous. Excellence must be our watchword. Are you called to serve (Rom 12:7), having been specially endowed by God to labour in the body of Christ just as a servant does (a servant to the brethren)? Are you called to teach or to encourage (exhort) the brethren? Some are specially endowed with the gift of giving. Some are called into administration, some specially endowed to show mercy. Some are called to be evangelists, some pastors etc. Whatever is your area of service in the body of Christ you must excel in that area. You must be the best in your calling. God’s expectation of you is that you should grow so much in your calling as to attain excellence, to be the man of virtue in that service. Are you an usher? You can be the best in that area of service so much that you will grow from ushering men and women into a church auditorium. You will begin to usher them with definiteness into the presence of God, and usher sinners into the kingdom of God. Are you a fellowship treasurer or a cleaner? Stop being complacent. There is much room for growth, much room to excel.
5. In The Knowledge Of The Lord.
“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse that I may win Christ” (Phil 3:8). Here is a man who knew the value of excellency in the knowledge of God. He preferred to lose all things, indeed he lost all things just in order to attain this. He lost his natural right of birth as a Jew, his position in the society as a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin council; he lost his comfort and gave up all his rights in order for him not only to know Christ, but to attain excellence in his knowledge and experience of God. In short, you can read Phil. 3:4-7, 2 Cor 11:22-23 to see some of those things he gave up in order to know the Lord. He was a man of virtue in the knowledge of the Lord. Most of the mysteries we read and receive from the epistles were a result of his personal experience of the knowledge of the Lord. Actually, excellency in the knowledge of the Lord is what gives rise to excellency in thought, conduct, speech and service. A man that is not eager to walk close with the Lord in order to know Him more and more and be acquainted with Him will not experience excellency and virtue in any area of his life and he will likely perish. Remember that most of the Israelites who decided to stand afar off in their knowledge of, and relationship with the Lord, perished in the wilderness. God abhors lukewarmness. You must not be contented with how much you know the Lord now. You will know the Lord if you follow on to know the Lord (Hoses 6:3).
How Shall These Things Be?
That was the question Mary asked angel Gabriel who brought the word of God unto her concerning God’s desire to use her to bring Jesus Christ into the world. It looked very impossible from the natural point of view, “… seeing I know not man”. Such a thing had never occurred and it looked impossible even to believe. But what is impossible with men is not impossible with God. For with God all things are possible.
1. Believe
When we talk about virtue or the possibility of attaining excellence in every area of life, it looks over ambitious and impossible. It looks Iike the exception rather than the rule. But since this is the will of God concerning us, we’d better believe it and press towards it, allowing God to work it in us. Just as Mary faithfully believed God and received the word sent to her, I challenge you today to recetve this word with meekness and believe God. For with God, nothing shall be impossible.
2. God Has Made A Deposit
God does not reap where He has not sown. If He is making a demand on our lives to be men and women of excellence, it is because He has already made a deposit. He has sown a seed that will bear that fruit in our lives.
“According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that has called us to glory and virtue; By which are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by this, ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. ” (2 Pet 1:3-4)
When a man is born again, something great happens. He has escaped the corruption that is in the world. He becomes pure within. He is immediately delivered from the kingdom of darkness, from the local government territory of darkness (Col 1:13). He has escaped the reach of the devil. But he is not left in a vacuum. He is immediately translated into the kingdom of His dear Son, a kingdom governed by a different law, norms and beliefs (the law of the Spirit of life). The old has passed away. The new has come. He is born of God, by the incorruptible seed of the word of God (1 Pet. 1:23). God puts His seed (His nature) in that man (1 Jn 3:9). The way the King James version of the Bible puts it is particularly interesting. “… the seed of God remaineth in him.” God sows the seed of His own life, His own nature in every one who is born of God. It is this seed, though it looks small as a mustard seed, that grows into a mighty tree in due course. It is this that produces virtue in a believer’s life. But when a man is not born of God, this seed is not in him and virtue is far from him.
3. Be Consecrated
“I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” (Rom. 12:1)
The first necessary step to take in order to walk the road unto excellence is to make yourself available. Present your body to God for His use. He is the one that works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. If He needs your mouth to prophesy or your hands to serve and these are not made available unto Him, nothing will be achieved. You must be readily available. It is as you do this that you become perfected in your call.
Your mind also needs to be consistent, in order to consistently progress in excellence. God’s attitude to things must be your attitude, His thoughts your thoughts. Renew your mind by God’s word and you will discover excellence in thought, word and deed. You must not hold tightly to your old traditional concepts, norms and beliefs. Self must not be allowed to control you. To be a man of virtue, you must also be a man of one focus, a man of a single eye. You cannot be involved in all things at all times and expect yourself to excel. Focus! Concentrate your attention, your life and wealth unto the call of God on your life. Virtue will soon begin to issue out of your life as you serve God.
4. Be Diligent
When you surrendered your life to Jesus at the new birth, He deposited His divine nature in you. But for this divine nature of God to become your daily experience, it requires consistent spiritual growth; it requires diligence. When you were born again, you were born in Christ Jesus. But that must not be the climax of your relationship with God. Christ in turn must be born in you (Gal. 4:19). It takes a moment of decision for you to be born in Christ. But for Christ to be born in you is not a day’s affair. It takes dedication, it takes hard work. Therefore the Lord now says: “ And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge.”(2 Pet 1:5).
Do not stay at the level of your faith in Christ Jesus. There is more to salvation than your faith. Press on to add virtue to your faith. Let your life portray excellence in every aspect, in thought, in word, in deed, in service, add excellence. Be upright. Be chaste inside out. Work on your inner life until a life of excellence issues forth. But this will not be easy. It requires diligence. 2 Peter 1:5 (NIV) says “… make every effort to add to your faith …”. It requires effort. You need to pay close attention to it and concentrate on this matter before you can begin to experience it. You must be diligent about it. Make it a matter in the place of prayer. Watch your life. Watch your ways. Watch your thought, speech, conduct and action and every loophole must be diligently and honestly dealt with in the place of prayer. You may bleed, you may cry but it does not matter. No matter how long the weeping lasts, joy will surely come in the morning. That seed of God in you will spring forth as you daily yield unto God’s dealings. Seeds grow their roots best in darkness. So also a life of virtue does not grow roots in a man in the public. It grows as a man diligently tarries in the secret place of the Most High in prayers, in the study of God’s word , in receiving God’s dealings with meekness and in obedience to God’s instructions even if it be with tears in the first place. A lazy man can not endure this. Neither can a man who prefers to worship God afar off. You must refuse these so that God’s virtue will flow out from within you and His purpose get accomplished in your life.
5. Learn of Me:
“ Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (Matt. 11:29).
Jesus Himself is the embodiment of virtue. He is the one lifted up by God for us to follow. Unto His image we have been called to be conformed. And He said, ‘take my yoke upon you and learn of me’. Having a different yoke will not lead you unto a life of virtue even if you try to follow Jesus. The yoke of people’s expectation of your life, tradition, ambition (even in Christian service), unequal yoke in marriage, etc. will hinder you from attaining a life of excellence. Christ’s yoke must be your yoke, His focus your focus, any program He does not have for you must not be your program. And as you bear His yoke, learn of Him. God has approved Him for us to follow in every area of life. Follow His lifestyle, His conduct, manner of speech, etc. If there is any decision in life you do not know how to take, study Jesus. You can safely imitate His lifestyle and you will never be wrong after all. And upon all, His life of virtue will manifest in you too. Just as none was able to correctly fault His life, yours will be a life that cannot easily be faulted.
Enemies Of A Virtuous Life.
There are some life attitudes which act as stumbling blocks and hindrances unto achieving a virtuous life. A man who is complacent can not achieve excellence. He simply lacks the momentum to overcome the Inertia that comes whenever any inconvenient step is to be taken. And to press towards a life full of virtue is not a convenient project.
Complacency is an attitude of self satisfaction even when the goal is not yet achieved. Do you find yourself generally complacent each time a new and unfamiliar though correct step is to be taken? You need to cry to God to help you pull down this giant of complacency.
Procrastination is another. This is generally an inner tendency to postpone what you could conveniently do in the present. When you are instructed to do something, whether by men or by the Lord, do you find yourself postponing (delaying) obedience ? It looks small but it is a giant that will surely rob you of the glorious and virtuous life unto which you have been called if not dealt with. You have a need to be sincere and to pray.
Laziness is another life attitude that robs a man from attaining God’s goal for his life. “The slothful man saith, there is a lion with out; I shall be slain in the streets” (Prov 22:13). A lazy man is a fearful man. He knows the right step to take but is too fearful to take it. He is full of fearful imaginations, full of excuses, as to why he should not take that step. Every step in life involves a risk but a man who desires a life of excellence must trust God to handle every problem encountered. A lazy man is however faithless. He only sees problems but never sees God. Laziness casts into a deep sleep and is capable of hindering a man from becoming a man of virtue. You must beware.
Another type of laziness is described in Prov. 19:24. “A slothful man hideth his hand in his dish and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.”
He is a man who has good food set before him. He sets his hand in the dish but to lift the food with his hands to his mouth, he finds it difficult. Such is the man who knows what good thing to do, starts doing it but to complete what he has started, he knows not to do. Earlier on, we discovered that virtue is a powerful inner ability that is capable of achieving something definite and excellent. A man of virtue does not only start a work but continues it until a definite result that surpasses all others is achieved. But for a lazy man, he is either too lazy to pursue a matter at all, or he starts pursuing it but to complete it and achieve the desired goal he knows not to do. Laziness is a terrible devourer, an effective weapon in the hands of the devil to hinder God’s work in and through a man’s life. Many times you had heard a message that struck your heart, and you were convicted. You saw clearly where you transgressed, or you received a clear instruction about steps to take to make your life better or to accomplish God’s mandate of your life. Then what did you do? You quickly rose up to start doing what God wanted you to do but within a week or two, you grew cold again and stoped ever before a definite and excellent result was achieved. That is laziness. It looks like the rocky soil in the parable of the sower. Laziness will not allow you to pursue a matter to the expected conclusion. You must run away from it or it will run you into deep poverty on the day of reckoning.
Lack of FOCUS. To achieve excellence in character, in thoughts, word and deed, demands focus as said earlier on. It requires concentration of attention. In life situations, there are certain things that hinder and diverge a man’s focus. The cares and affairs of this life and the desire to have whatever appeals to your eyes could strongly divert the attention of a man from his focus. While you get worried about what to eat, what to wear and so on, the birds of the air (demons) quickly run to steal away that seed from your heart and you see nothing to focus on again. For some, it is the deceitfulness of riches. The thoughts of their past achievements whether physical or spiritual, even physical wealth are all things that are capable of choking and strangulating that focus from your heart. Before you know it, your heart is shifted from concentrating on that instruction God gave you and you are unable to achieve any thing concrete with it. These things are subtle but powerful in hindering a man from achieving the desire of God. In Phil. 3:8, Paul said “ Yea doubtless, I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord…” A man who must attain excellence is a man who has decided to count all things but loss; to disregard self. You must also count all things but loss in order to pursue excellence in the knowledge of the Lord and in all that He asks you to do.
Having discovered these devourers there is no need for you to waste your life sitting down in that miry clay again. No need to sit down eating the husks used in feeding pigs like the prodigal son again, seeing that your Father has something good in stock for you. His desire is for you to be a man and woman of virtue. He seeks to have something excellent issuing out of your life. His thoughts towards you are thoughts of peace not of evil, to give you a desired end. I challenge vou today; arise and go back to your Father. Arise and pursue excellence in His call over your life. You that have been wallowing in evil thoughts and sinful habits, arise. Has the devil made you to believe that such a thing is unattainable in this life? Arise out of that imagination. Arise out of complacency and laziness. If you refuse to arise and do this pleasure of God, He is able to make children out of even stones. You must not allow your life to be reshuffled and replaced with stones. May the Lord strike your heart right now and cause you to arise and be a man/woman of virtue in Jesus’ Name.
